Wyverstone Community Cafe - Next Cafe - Saturday 3rd October - Apple Day!

October 1st, 2009

Wyverstone Community Cafe

10am-2pm. We will be celebrating all things "appley" with lots of apple-related activities: A display of as many varieties as we can find to see, taste and buy; apple-juice making; apple-bobbing; and a very apple-themed menu for the day.

The British climate produces arguably the finest tasting apples in the world, yet we see them for only a few weeks a year in our supermarkets, the rest of the time we eat fruit imported from around the world. A combination of lack of interest and bizarre disincentives from the EU (grants to grub up orchards??) have reduced England's orchards to a fraction of their former glory. But now there is a real resurgence in interest in apples and cider, with many of our older varieties being prized for flavour. Over the last three years we have planted over 200 apple trees on our smallholding in Wyverstone, a mixture of those heritage varieties together with the best of the modern ones. Some of these will be on show at the Apple Day, together with others locally sourced. Come along and enjoy the taste of England!

Wyverstone Community Cafe is a regular fortnightly event held at our village hall in Wyverstone, Suffolk. We pride ourselves in serving excellent coffee and home-baked cakes, as well as our popular bacon and egg baps. We also have local produce on sale in a mini farmers market - currently organic vegetables and eggs, fruit in season, home-made cakes, chutneys and jams, and also now locally-raised pork, sausages and bacon.
