Awards for All, England offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 for projects that improve communities, and the lives of people within them. Viridor Credits (previously managed by Suffolk Environmental Trust)

Projects need to be within 10 miles of a Viridor landfill site for this fund, the three sites are in Wangford, Foxhall and Gt Blakenham. Heritage Lottery Fund

Focuses on projects that help people learn about their local, regional or national heritage and take part in related activities. Contact 020 7591 6000 or visit www.hlf.org.uk
 
Sport England Grants
For projects that encourage people to take part in sport, ensuring quality sporting experiences and helping to improve peoples performance in their chosen sport. Further details can be obtained from 0845 275 00 00 or by visiting www.sportengland.org
 
Tudor Trust
The Trustees will consider applications from anywhere in the UK, especially those concerned with areas of deprivation. It is not necessary to be a registered charity in order to apply however applications will only be considered from not-for-profit organisations. Biffaward
 
The Biffaward fund is part of the government's Landfill Communities Fund (LCF) previously known as the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme (LTCS). The scheme allows landfill operators to donate a percentage of landfill tax for the benefit of community and environmental taxes, compensating communities living near landfill sites for any inconvenience and adverse impact caused by their operations.

Biffaward grants of £50,000 maximum are available :
  • For the provision of or improvement to a public facility or amenity for the benefit of and use by local community.
  • Bio-diversity projects are required to protect the environment, conserve or promote biological diversity through restoration or enhancement of a natural habitat or maintenance for a natural species
  • Structures and buildings for religious worship, historic or architectural interest.  Please note we only consider projects delivering wider community benefits. We do not fund repairs for clocks, organs, bells etc.
Projects must realise grants are highly competitive and projects must have efficient match-funding in place.
Any project wishing to apply must be within 10 miles of a Biffa Landfill site and a landfill waste operation.

Village SOS Competition

The Village SOS competition, linked to the current BBC 1 series, will give around 250 awards of between £10,000 and £30,000 to kick start community businesses. 
Support will be available for inspiring business ideas that will bring people together in villages and support activities and enterprises that will tackle the challeges they face.  The competition focuses on enterprising ideas that will use the skills of local people, and the area's natural resources, land and buildings.

There are three main entry requirements:
  • You must be a community enterprise
  • Your village must be in a rural area and have fewer that 3,000 people living in it
  • Only one application from each village can  be accepted

The competition is a two stage process:

1) Entry Stage. You will be asked about your idea, how you know it is needed and how you have consulted with your community.  The deadline for this stage is 6th October.

2) Application Stage. Around 5,000 entrants will be invited to participate in this stage, involving more detailed applicationform, including details such as the projects budget and how it will be managed.  Villages will have around three months to complete this part of their entry as forms will need to be submitted by February 2012, with grant offers being made from May 2012.

If you work in a charity, social enterprise or voluntary orgainsation and want to improve your skills while studying for an accredited qualification in management, Anglia Ruskin University's new Certificate in Higher Education: Charity & Social Enterprise Management could be just what you're looking for.   This exciting new pathway begins in March 2011, and has been designed with the busy third sector professional (and his or her organisation) in mind:
