Deprivation in Rural Suffolk:

Highly-deprived areas and the rural share of deprivation

Final Project Report
February 2008

Oxford Consultants for Social Inclusion Ltd (OCSI)

Suffolk ACRE, Suffolk County Council & Oxford Consultants for Social Inclusion (OCSI) have produced a detailed report detailing the levels of deprivation in Rural Suffolk.

In commissioning this project, Suffolk Action with Communities in Rural England (Suffolk ACRE) together with Suffolk CC have sought to further develop the evidence base on rural deprivation across the county by:

  • Identifying small pockets of deprivation in rural areas across the county, that are not identified using existing standard measures such as the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2004
  • Highlighting the rural share of deprivation, or in other words, the number and proportion of people experiencing deprivation issues living in rural Suffolk
  • Profiling the smaller towns and villages across the county, to better support local parish and community planning work.

It is intended that the evidence base developed under this proposal will be used to help support more detailed future business case development work on, for example, programmes around Wheels2Work (KickStart), New and Emerging Communities, and those young adults not entering education, employment or training (NEETs).
